CODEMISUSED Dissemination to Representatives from INCB, EMCDDA and UNODC in Vienna July 2015

On Monday 6th July 2015 - Before attending a UN Office of Drugs & Crime scientific expert meeting on the World Drug Report (7-8 July 2015), Prof Charles Parry (Medical Research Council, South Africa) who is on secondment with Cara Pharmacy in Ireland during July and August 2015 arranged to meet with Beate Hammond from the Narcotics Control & Estimates Section of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) based in Vienna and shared with her the work on the CODEMISUSED Project  via a PowerPoint presentation. INCB is interested in the issue of codeine misuse and dependence especially as a procedure has now been developed to extract codeine directly from the opium poppy which opens the door to an increased in the use of codeine containing (pain) medications with possibly increases in misuse and dependence. While in Vienna Prof Parry also talked about the study less formally with Paul Griffiths, Scientific Director of the European Monitoring Centre on Drugs & Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) based in Lisbon, and Kamran Niaz, Statistician in the Studies & Scientific Section of the UN Office on Drugs & Crime (UNODC) based in Vienna. They both expressed an interest in the CODEMISUSED Project and being kept abreast of various outputs from the project as they emerge over time.
