Codeine abuse is a habit, but how should South Africa deal with it?

Codeine abuse accounted for 2.5% of roughly 20 000 admissions to South African drug treatment centres in 2014, according to a South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) study published in the South African Medical Journal last year.

Professor Charles Parry is the director of the alcohol, tobacco and other drug research unit at the SAMRC. Dr Tara Carney is a senior scientist in the same unit  at the SAMRC; and Dr Marie Claire van Hout is Principal Investigator & Project Coordinator of CODEMISUSED, based in the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Science in the School of Health Sciences at the Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland.
